Job Title: Instrumentation Field Engineer.

Location: Portland, TX.
Schedule: Long-term contract; must be flexible to work day, night, or split shifts as required.
Citizenship: Work authorization required.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a qualified Instrumentation Field Engineer to provide technical oversight and field engineering support for the installation, inspection, and commissioning of instrumentation systems on a large-scale industrial project. The engineer will be a key part of the field engineering team, ensuring high-quality construction, adherence to design specifications, and smooth execution of the instrumentation scope. This role involves daily coordination with construction supervision, engineering, subcontractors, and project controls.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field inspections and generate supporting documentation for instrumentation installations and systems.
  • Provide hands-on technical support to construction supervisors and crews.
  • Assist with defining workforce, tools, materials, and equipment needs for instrumentation tasks.
  • Support and maintain short-term lookahead and long-range schedules in coordination with Superintendents and Field Engineering leadership.
  • Generate material takeoffs from IFC (Issued for Construction) drawings and contribute to quantity tracking systems.
  • Prepare and manage field material requisitions; track procurement status and delivery of instrumentation components.
  • Troubleshoot design discrepancies and coordinate resolutions with engineering, procurement, and vendors using formal documentation processes.
  • Ensure installations comply with latest design drawings, project specifications, standards, and applicable codes.
  • Act as the technical liaison for subcontractors performing instrumentation work on site.
  • Support and verify inspections, test plans, and quality control documentation.
  • Assist in walk-downs, deficiency resolution, system turnover, and final documentation.
  • Contribute to project reporting and help monitor performance against cost and schedule baselines.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Instrumentation, or related discipline) and 3–5 years of relevant experience; OR 6–9 years of equivalent field experience in lieu of degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in field construction environments—especially in oil & gas, petrochemical, LNG, or large infrastructure projects.
  • Working knowledge of instrumentation codes and standards (e.g., ISA, NEC, API).
  • Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, vendor data, and installation procedures.
  • Field experience managing technical service subcontracts.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard software such as MS Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with construction and engineering automation tools such as:
    • Setroute.
    • Unifier.
    • Aconex.
    • DSCS.
    • PTR.
    • Agile.
    • Navisworks.
  • Previous experience on a U.S. Gulf Coast LNG construction project highly preferred.
  • Understanding of client-specific work processes and standard procedures.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically capable of performing field work in a construction setting, including walking long distances, climbing ladders/scaffolds, working at elevated heights, and entering confined spaces.
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions including heat, humidity, uneven surfaces, and construction noise.
  • Use of standard PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and life vests is required based on assigned tasks.
