Editorial Director

Tsaile Campus

Duty Schedule:

8 am-5 pm, Monday to Friday, occasional travel, and after hours.

Summary/Objective of Position:

Diné College is committed to establishing a college press as a cornerstone for scholarly and cultural expression, particularly emphasizing the heritage and perspectives of the Navajo Nation and broader Indigenous communities. The Editorial Director will be crucial in developing and successfully implementing this press, overseeing the business and marketing, acquisitions, editorial, design, and production of books, journals, and textbooks. This position requires strong project management skills to launch and sustain publication processes effectively, ensuring the press meets the mission and goals of scholarly excellence and cultural relevance.

Diné College Press will publish books and the Journal of Navajo Education. These works will focus on the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis on Diné and Indigenous histories, ways, and communities. The works will advocate diverse perspectives and inspire critical thought and action. We will publish and make accessible works of intellectual, cultural, historical, and addressing challenges facing Diné and Indigenous peoples. One of our goals is to publish manuscripts, articles, and other written texts that make a positive difference for Diné and Indigenous peoples and communities. We will also publish significant non-scholarly works by writers, artists, community scholars, and intellectuals from within and beyond the academy.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

Minimum:

Master's degree and/or PhD preferred in Journalism, Communications, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.

Knowledge:

  • Project Management: As the primary responsibility, lead the development and operational setup of the college press, managing timelines, resources, and staff to
    ensure strategic objectives are met.
    • Implement and oversee project management practices and tools to track progress, manage risks, and successfully complete publication projects.
  • Editorial Oversight:
    • Manage the complete publication cycle from manuscript submission to publication, upholding high quality and cultural integrity standards.
    • Supervise the peer review process to guarantee fairness, academic rigor, and alignment with the college's mission.
  • Team Leadership and Development:
    • Lead and develop a team of business and marketing, acquisitions, editorial, design, and production of books, journals, and textbooks, fostering
      a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and continuous learning.
    • Provide mentorship, set performance standards, and support career development for team members.

Skills:

  • Project Management Skills:
    • Demonstrated leadership in project management, including the ability to oversee complex projects from conception to completion.
    • Skilled in using project management tools and adapting strategies to meet evolving challenges.
  • Leadership and Communication Skills:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively manage and motivate a diverse team.

Abilities:

  • Extensive experience in editorial roles within an academic or professional publishing environment.
  • Deep understanding of issues pertinent to the Navajo Nation and Indigenous communities.
  • Expertise in desktop publishing and digital content management.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office environment: includes but is not limited to the use of a personal computer, viewing a monitor, entering and retrieving data, use of a printer, malfunctioning copier (copy, email, fax, scanning); filing documents and information; ability to attend and participate in meetings and training's; ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to internal and external customers via multimedia (email, fax, phone, letter, etc.); moderate physical activity; and very limited exposure to physical risk but may require some extended periods of sitting, standing or walking.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality; some in-state and out-of-state travel may be required.

Other Requirement(s):

  • Oral fluency in Navajo is highly desirable, but not mandatory.
  • Must have and maintain a valid state-issued driver's license and successfully pass a background check. Other licensing may be required depending
    on position and/or area of assignment.
